We are so happy that you would like to commit yourself to helping boat refugees! At this moment our aid is focused on the acute need that can be seen on Lesbos and Samos. Would you like to help as a volunteer in these areas? Please read the information below about the possibilities and procedure!
It’s great that you want to do something for the boat refugees. Because the people are now staying in Greece on a long term basis (these aren’t transit camps anymore, but permanent camps) the care we are giving will be changing. People live together in communities and we support those communities. Therefore, we are looking for volunteers with specific skills. In general, we mean medics, psychologists, physical therapists, remedial educationalists, teachers, social workers, youth workers, physical education teachers, (female) translators Farsi and Arabic. Are you one of these people? Then please continue reading!
The volunteer work is very taxing. Therefore we urge you to read this profile thoroughly to see if you are up to it! The work you do is emotionally and physically exhausting. You will work long hours; getting up early in the morning and working until late in the evening. Your nights will be short and you will find yourself in intense, confrontational situations. This makes it essential that you feel secure in yourself and are physically and mentally healthy.
Apart from this, we expect you to show independence and initiative as well as a large degree of flexibility. It is important that you are very motivated to do this type of work. Lastly, we need you to be good at working in a team and that you are proficient enough in English to make yourself understood.
To be a volunteer in Greece, you must be available at least 14 days and have a Facebook account. Our organisation is based around Facebook and all contacts with our co-ordinators, the contacts with fellow volunteers as well as the exchange of the documents you need, are done via Facebook. This is all arranged in closed groups and through private messages, to ensure your privacy.
Are you a match for this profile? Then read on about the registration procedure!
Do you not fit the profile completely or is there another reason why you cannot participate in Greece? Please see if you and your connections might start a fund raiser to collect money for the foundation. Boat refugees need all the help they can get, whether you leave or stay in The Netherlands! The fact that you are considering this and want to do something is a wonderful thing in itself!
Volunteering through Boat Refugee Foundation is done on your own responsibility. As a foundation we are not responsible for your trip, for possible cancellation fees or any other circumstances that may arise. That is why it is important that you have a good travel insurance. Also, it is essential that you inquire about required vaccines before you leave.
Does the profile fit you like a glove and are you still excited about becoming a volunteer? Please register yourself with our foundation! This can be done by filling out this form. We ask these questions to get a good idea about you as a volunteer, but also to make you realize the intensity of the work. It is both physically and emotionally quite intensive!
Therefore we make a selection of the volunteers we think are suitable to do this work, based on all the registrations we receive. We will inform you about the next steps regarding your registration. In due course you will receive all additional information.
Please note: since we want to use the donated money for supplies for the refugees as much as possible, we are not able to reimburse the costs for flights for our volunteers. This means that you are responsible for your plane ticket, car rental and meals. We have our own accommodation, all volunteers can stay here for €10,- per night.
Will my costs be reimbursed?
Since we want to use the donated money for supplies for the refugees as much as possible, we are not able to reimburse the costs for flights and daily costs for our volunteers. This means that you are responsible for your plane ticket, car rental and meals. The prices of tickets vary from day to day, but between 300 and 700 euro is a good indication. We have our own accommodation, all volunteers can stay here for €10,- per night.
Can I bring supplies when I go as a volunteer?
You may bring supplies when you go as a volunteer. Please consult the foundation about which supplies are most needed at that time. This is also at your own expense. Another possibility is to find sponsors, in order to be able to get supplies when you are there. In this way you are also supporting the local economy and many of the items are readily available locally.
How do I get supplies when I am there?
The supplies that we get locally are mainly funded by the foundation. If necessary and possible, this will be complemented with your own sponsor money.
Can I collect supplies here in the Netherlands and send them or ship them?
At this moment we do not collect supplies. We receive a lot of messages from people who would like to collect supplies in the Netherlands. Currently, we focus on the emergency aid that is needed by sending volunteers and buying supplies locally. We as a foundation do not co-ordinate the collection of supplies in the Netherlands. What does happen, is that volunteers collect supplies themselves. Now and then you may find messages regarding this on our Facebook page, which enables you to get in touch with them.
