Are you empathic, proactive and independent? Do you like to cook, support volunteers and turn our volunteer houses into a safe haven? Then the position of Host(ess) might be a match!

Where will you work?

Boat Refugee Foundation offers medical and psychological (emergency) aid and stands up for the rights of people on the run. Where systems become inhumane and compassion
gets lost, we take action. Since 2015 we’ve been running operations in different locations on the borders of Europe.

At the moment we are active in Mavrovouni camp on Lesbos, which houses approximately 6.000 people in degrading circumstances. Our teams rely mostly on the power of professional volunteers. They are the heart of our organization and work long, intensive days. Therefor we find it important to take good care of them, so that they have a good feeling in the team and in the volunteer house.

What will you do?

For this we are looking for an enthusiastic and social volunteer who likes to make people feel at ease. As a host you will be responsible for all that goes on in and around the volunteer house. Amongst other things, these are the tasks:

Tasks
  • You organize the volunteer pick-ups and drop-offs at the airport/port, using our ‘buddy system’;
  • You welcome new volunteers in our volunteer house, show them around and explain the house rules;
  • You support the volunteer coordinator in making the bed planning and keeping the overview of new arrivals;
  • You keep the house clean and tidy, in collaboration with the volunteers. Besides this you are responsible for setting up the chores schedule and making sure this is followed;
  • You take care of lunch (hot meals 4 times a week) and make lunch packages for our medical volunteers;
  • You take care of the groceries for the volunteer house and the medical meeting/training sessions. Groceries are done approximately 3 times a week;
  • You are responsible for washing the towels, bed and kitchen linen, and work clothes;
  • You take care of a cozy setting and atmosphere in the house;
  • You prepare everything for the general meeting;
  • You collect input from volunteers and determine, together with the volunteer coordinator, how this can be addressed;
  • You support the volunteer coordinator with jobs in and around the house;
  • You are responsible for keeping track of volunteer lunch payments; this means you keep an Excel overview on our Google Drive;
  • Any additional ad-hoc tasks required at a certain moment.
Who are we looking for?
  • You are available for a minimum of 6 weeks;
  • You stand your ground firmly and are physically and mentally healthy;
  • You are fluent in English;
  • You have driving license (you will have to drive in a manual (stick shift) car);
  • You are energetic, empathic, and have strong social and communication skills;
  • You like interacting with people and are able to deal with different personality types, nationalities and cultures;
  • You don’t mind staying in the volunteer house, which is also your work environment;
  • You have no 9 to 5 mentality, but are flexible and don’t mind switching between early and late shifts;
  • You have a proactive mindset and like to take care of practical things;
  • You like to cook for large groups;
  • You are very experienced in using Excel and Google Drive;
  • Preferably, you have some experience in keeping a (financial) administration;
  • You have some experience abroad (internship, work, living, …);
  • You can think in solutions.
Costs and conditions

Boat Refugee Foundation’s existence depends on the many volunteers and donators, without which we’d not be able to do our job. Our financial means are mostly spent on emergency care. That is why we ask all volunteers to pay for their own travel and stay. We have two volunteer houses on Lesvos where you can stay for 10 euros a night. After one month you can stay here for free. Apart from this, you will need to cover the appropriate travel insurance and possible vaccinations.

Because of the volatile situation in the camp, in combination with COVID-19, it is possible that we need to make last-minute changes to the program. We need you to be flexible and think along in solutions, which we will always find!
