Are you a nurse or doctor and do you want to mean something to people on the run? Then come join our medical team on Lesvos as a volunteer! Together with our MHPSS team you will contribute to humane (emergency) care from our mobile clinic in reception centre Mavrovouni.

About us

Boat Refugee Foundation provides medical and psychosocial (emergency) care and stands up for the rights of people on the run. Since 2015, we have been working on various hotspots in Greece. We are currently active in the Mavrovouni camp on Lesvos, where approximately 6,000 people are living in appalling conditions.

What will you do?

As a volunteer you will work in our medical team, which largely consists of professional voluntary nurses, doctors and interpreters, who live in the camp themselves. They play an indispensable role in our team.

We provide (emergency) care from our mobile clinic in the camp, seven days a week – from morning till night time. The complaints we see vary from flu symptoms to serious physical or psychological complaints.

We are currently looking for:

Nurses
  • You graduated as a nurse; clinical working experience is not a must;
  • As we see many (serious) psychological complaints, it is important that you can deal with this;
  • It is an advantage if you have experience working in ER, psychiatry, pediatrics or ambulance care;
  • You preferably have experience working in a multicultural environment.
Doctors
  • We are looking for interns and residents with at least two years of clinical working experience;
  • It is an advantage if you have working experience in general practice, emergency care, intensive care, pediatrics or International Health and Tropical Medicine;
  • You preferably have experience working in a multicultural environment.
Physicians with experience in psychiatry
  • Nurses or doctors with experience within acute psychiatry, or aid/assistance to people in a crisis situation;
  • You have sufficient somatic experience;
  • Experience in sessions with traumatised patients and patients with severe psychological complaints, including panic attacks, psychosis and suicidality;
  • You can work without supervision and are willing to educate other volunteers;
  • Preferably experience working in a multicultural environment.
What do we expect from you?
  • You are available for a minimum of 6 weeks;
  • You speak English fluently; Speaking French, Arabic, Farsi or Greek is a strong pro.
  • You can stand your ground firmly and you're physically and mentally healthy;
  • You have a driver’s license B (you will have to drive in a manual car every day).
  • You are open to late evening shifts and deal well with little sleep.
  • You are indepent, but also aware of the limits of your (medical) skills and know when to ask for help;
  • You are able to deal with emotional and confronting situations and able to separate work from personal topics;
  • You can work well with people from different cultural backgrounds backgrounds;
  • You are flexible and can easily adapt to changes.
Costs and conditions

Boat Refugee Foundation’s existence depends on the many volunteers and donators, without which we’d not be able to do our job. Our financial means are mostly spent on emergency care. That is why we ask all volunteers to pay for their own travel and stay. We have two volunteer houses on Lesvos where you can stay for 10 euros a night. After one month you can stay here for free. Apart from this, you will need to cover the appropriate travel insurance and possible vaccinations.

Because of the volatile situation in the camp, in combination with COVID-19, it is possible that we need to make last-minute changes to the program. We need you to be flexible and think along in solutions, which we will always find!
